Wayne Cannon, Ph.D.
Director, Space Tracking
and Navigation
Wayne Cannon is Director of Thoth Technology’s Space Tracking and
Navigation (STN) Division and is a veteran of 33 years experience in the field
of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) systems and applications. Dr. Cannon
has a PhD in Geophysics and Astronomy from the University of British Columbia
and has conducted research with a wide range of national and international
collaborators at various venues, including the California Institute of
Technology, NASA/JPL, and York University, where he is a member of the
department of Physics and Astronomy and teaches in the Space Engineering
program.
Dr. Cannon founded
the Space Geodynamics Laboratory (SGL) in 1988 and has served as Lab Director
for the past sixteen years. SGL has collaborated with the Geodetic Survey
Division of NRCan, CSA, and the Herzberg Institute for Astrophysics in
developing the S2 VLBI system. Dr. Cannon has used the 46 m antenna of the
Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO) for VLBI tracking of interplanetary probes,
including the Japanese Nazomi Mars spacecraft, as well as bi-static radar
observations of geostationary targets. Dr. Cannon recently served on the Board
of Directors of the International VLBI Service (IVS) and is a member of the
Radioastron International Science Committee (RISC) of the Russian-led
Radioastron space VLBI mission.
